What are endocrine disruptors?

For a woman with PCOS — whose hormonal regulation is already compromised — daily exposure to these chemicals is like pouring water into a leaking bucket. You can do everything right clinically and still struggle, because the environment you're living in is working against you.

Perfume — the one I didn't see coming

This was the hardest one for me personally. I loved my perfume. It was part of my routine, part of how I felt like myself. But conventional fragrances are among the most concentrated sources of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in most women's lives.

The word "fragrance" on an ingredient label is a legal loophole that can represent hundreds of undisclosed chemicals — many of which are phthalates, which are among the most well-studied endocrine disruptors. Phthalates have been directly linked to hormonal disruption, insulin resistance, and inflammation — all of which are central to PCOS.

When you spray conventional perfume, you're absorbing those chemicals through your skin and inhaling them into your lungs. Every day. For years. For a woman already managing a hormonal condition, this is a significant and entirely unnecessary burden.

💡 What I switched to

I switched to essential oil-based perfumes and natural fragrance brands that fully disclose their ingredient lists. Brands like Phlur, Ellis Brooklyn, and Heretic use cleaner fragrance chemistry. You can also simply use single-ingredient essential oils — rose, sandalwood, jasmine — and layer them yourself. It took a few weeks to adjust, but I genuinely don't miss the old perfume anymore.

The swaps that made the biggest difference

You don't have to overhaul everything at once. That's overwhelming and unsustainable. We went room by room, category by category, replacing products as they ran out. Here are the swaps that had the biggest impact:

A practical tool — EWG Skin Deep

The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database (ewg.org/skindeep) rates personal care and cleaning products based on their ingredient safety. It's free, easy to search, and became my go-to resource every time I considered a new product. Before buying anything that goes on or near my body, I check it there first.

You don't have to spend more money to make these swaps. Many clean alternatives are comparably priced to conventional products — and some, like wool dryer balls and essential oils, are actually cheaper long-term than single-use fragrance products.

The bottom line

Healing PCOS is not just about what you take — prescriptions, supplements, lab panels. It's also about what you remove. Endocrine disruptors in your daily environment are a real and underappreciated factor in hormonal dysfunction. They were a significant part of what was working against my body for years before I understood what they were.

I didn't overhaul my home overnight. I went category by category, product by product, as things ran out. One year later, our home is almost entirely free of synthetic fragrances and conventional chemical cleaners — and the difference in how I feel is real.
